From April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will become mandatory for self-employed individuals and landlords with gross income over £50,000.
From April 2027, the threshold will reduce to £30,000.
If you fall within these limits, you will no longer submit just one annual Self Assessment return. Instead, you will be required to:
-
Keep digital accounting records
-
Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
-
File a final year-end declaration
-
Use HMRC-approved software
The income threshold is based on total turnover before expenses, not profit.
Many taxpayers are unaware that they may already fall within scope.
If you are self-employed or receive rental income and are unsure whether MTD applies to you, we can:
-
Review your income position
-
Set up compliant digital bookkeeping
-
Handle quarterly submissions on your behalf
-
Ensure full HMRC compliance
Do not wait until the deadline approaches.
